Chapter 4.
(('Accumulating Wealth While the World Refuses to Die.'))
After reading Barbara Grizzuti Harrison's account of Russell's exploitation of others over the 'miracle wheat' sales at his own tabernacle, and by comparing it with their lack of provision for their ageing serving ones, the above title for this chapter is certainly well chosen. (('An old man, who had been at Bethel for thirty years, grew senile. His senility took the form of his muttering obscenities at the dining room table. He was given two "warnings", which his hardened arteries obviously couldn't assimilate, and then ordered to leave. He had no resources, financial or emotional. He was last seen begging in downtown Brooklyn.')). (Pg.79,80).
After labouring for the Lord for thirty years at that place, one would think that adequate caring provision for such ones would be readily available. I mean, while they with their vast accumulated wealth from the labours of such senile ones waited for the world to die. I don't remember hearing one report of a member of their 'governing body' begging on the streets when their mind and body failed them. So their 1973 issue of (('Twilight Years Can Be Useful Years')) would not be of any use to their 'worn-out' ones, would it? No, of course it wouldn't. Nor such news of the (('spanking-clean, beige-and-green Watchtower factories')) (Pg.80,81). This sort of spirit behaviour among them is what is now causing the anger of God to flame up in their regard. "For by those stammering with their lips and by a different tongue He will speak to this people, those to whom He has said: ""THIS IS THE RESTING PLACE. GIVE REST TO THE WEARY ONE. AND THIS IS THE PLACE OF EASE," BUT WHO WERE NOT WILLING TO HEAR". (Isaiah 28:12 NWT).
For their idols to allow an old man, who had been among them for thirty years, to end up as a beggar, is not giving rest to the weary one, neither for his body or his spirit.
(('A community leader expressed the majority sentiment: "While they're smiling and peddling sweet salvation, they're acting like Godzilla, gobbling up property, evicting people as if we were squatters on land which will eventually belong to them anyhow --when Jehovah gets rid of us. They don't mug anybody, they maintain their property well...but they don't pay taxes, and they don't contribute to communal life. How can you preach everlasting life and at the same time not care about people who have lived here all their lives? There are 1500 Witnesses living among us in their headquarters buildings, but they might as well be surrounded by a moat. It's as if we were living with a mediaeval commune in our midst"')). (Pg.85).
ADDRESSED TO SO-CALLED JWs:
While waiting for this world to die, their own New World has been dying the sooner from the standpoint of God and His Kingdom. What these people calling themselves Jehovah's Witnesses have failed to understand as to the transition from a worldly state to an everlasting righteous state, is this: "Esau represents the end of the first age, and Jacob the beginning of the next age. The beginning of a man is his hand, and the end of a man is his heel. Between the heel and the hand, Ezra, do not look for any interval." (2 Esdras 6:10 NEB). In other words, there will be nothing to cause an interval between the ages, or by the coming-in of the Kingdom of God. His Kingdom will be felt and seen in people's conduct, out of the righteous "waters" that will flood out unchristian conduct, such conduct as you have just read about. (Now read Isaiah 28:17-21). The conduct witnessed and recorded by one of their own proof-readers bears witness to these people that they are only of the "Esau age". So stop your knocking on doors, that you may be able to hear the One knocking at your door!
