FIRSTLY, HOW IS THE "KING OF THE SOUTH" IDENTIFIED?
It is identified through its assembly with kingly power, the so-called United Nations. Its citizens have a limited freedom of choice through demoncracy (governments by the will of the people), Christianity is tolerated, and hope exists among many through their faith in God. Such ones have relative freedom to practice their faith in obedience to Christian teachings for their spiritual development, and this is permitted to continue by the State.

HOW IS THE "KING OF THE NORTH" IDENTIFIED?
Literally, by its rule of force: Dictatorship. It uses its economic and military power as a veiled threat (satan's will), to war against spiritual Kingdom developments, causing desolation among the people (without help from God). This "king" has conducted a 'cold war' against nations that tolerate Christianity, 'flooding over' nations of the "king of the south" in an attempt to annihilate all hope in God. But the removal of the "constant feature" of effective anointed underpriests of God, by priestly apostates of many nations putting in their place unsealed "Ahab" 'elders' of the "foreign god" was spiritually doomed to fail. In literal fulfilment of Daniel 11:39, satan acts effectively against the most fortified strongholds of many countries. But in the spiritual fulfilment, satan has used whoever has given him recognition as king through his parallel work against the spiritually "fortified strongholds" of God    His anointed "sanctuary" class. This work has been implemented through the "Ahab" authority of glory-seekers in the spiritual "land" of His "sanctuary" class, working in conjunction with satan's "king of the North", and in this way satan has been working "along with a foreign god". (Dan 11:39).

"AND THEY WILL CERTAINLY PUT IN PLACE THE
  DISGUSTING THING THAT IS CAUSING DESOLATION".
The United Nations Organization is not the one scripturally described as the "disgusting thing that is causing desolation". (Dan 11:31). Otherwise, how could the "other sheep" of John 10:16 come out of "Babylon the great?" (Rev 18:4). For "Babylon" and her counterparts exist within all nations, and is the reason why the "king of the North" will "flood over and pass through" the lands of the "king of the South". Speaking literally, it is the "palatial tents" of satan's "king of the North" that are effectively "put in place" (planted) "between the grand sea and the holy mountain of Decoration." (Dan 11:45). "Those leaving the holy covenant" (V.30) are the ones that "remove the constant feature" (faithful anointed sons of God), and those following them are the "arms that will stand up^q, proceeding from him" ('arms' from the apostate governing 'body': their false teachings). Anointed ones that turned apostate in JW congregations are the ones that "profane the sanctuary" and "put in place the disgusting thing that is causing desolation". (To stand up^q means to take power and begin to rule). Spiritually speaking, "those leaving the holy covenant" are certainly not those who organised or put in place the League or United Nations; but are anointed persons that turned apostate and acted wickedly against the holy covenant. So what JWs convey the United Nations to be has nothing to do with the true fulfilment of the foregoing scriptures.
